What is the kirpan?

The word kirpan is comprised of two words: "kirpa" meaning grace or  compassion and "aan" meaning honor or dignity.
Although the kirpan  resembles and is often described in English as a "knife" or "small  sword," it is an article of faith that binds a Sikh to serving the  interests of humanity and cannot be simply categorized as a weapon.
